ARRIVAL & CITY

Getting Around

Freiburg is tiny. The whole city is walkable, trams run every 5 minutes, and the Ballhaus is right next to the main station. Here's how to arrive and move.

How To Arrive

Arriving in Freiburg

Direct ICE/TGV connections from Frankfurt (≈ 2 h), Munich (4 h), Paris (3 h 30), Zurich Airport (2 h). From Freiburg Hbf the Ballhaus is reachable by tram in 8 min or on foot in about 22 min via the city centre.

  • Deutsche Bahn app for Germany-wide tickets — Sparpreis from ~€15 if booked early
  • TGV / SNCF: direct Paris ↔ Freiburg around 3 h 30
  • Baden-Württemberg-Ticket: regional day pass, great value for small groups

EuroAirport Basel (BSL, 70 km) is the closest international airport. Frankfurt (FRA, 300 km) offers the largest intercontinental network and a fast ICE link straight from the airport’s Fernbahnhof. Zurich (ZRH, 80 km) is the Swiss alternative — a direct train ride away. Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden (FKB, 120 km) is the closest low-cost option, and Stuttgart (STR, 210 km) is well connected via direct ICE trains.

  • BSL → Freiburg · FlixBus direct ≈ 55 min, from ~€6 — cheapest airport transfer
  • FRA → Freiburg · ICE from Frankfurt Airport Fernbahnhof, fastest 2 h 04, avg. 2 h 37, 8 direct trains/day, from €15 if booked early
  • ZRH → Freiburg · Deutsche Bahn ICE/IC, fastest 2 h 05, avg. 2 h 38, usually 1 change in Basel, 18 departures/day, from ~€5 (Sparpreis)
  • FKB (Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden) → Freiburg · airport bus to Karlsruhe Hbf, then ICE to Freiburg, ~2 h 30 total — convenient for low-cost carriers (Ryanair / Wizz Air)
  • STR (Stuttgart) → Freiburg · S-Bahn S2 / S3 to Stuttgart Hbf, then ICE to Freiburg, ~2 h 50 total

Direct motorway access from north and south. The city centre is mostly pedestrianised — park once and walk. Paid parking is available at the venue and nearby garages; we recommend Schlossberg Garage (5-min walk).

  • Schlossberg Garage · ~€18 / day
  • City centre mostly pedestrian — park & walk
  • Partner hotels offer discounted parking — see Accommodation

FlixBus runs overnight routes from all major European cities. The central bus station (ZOB) sits directly next to the Hauptbahnhof — from there the Ballhaus is 8 min by tram or 22 min on foot.

  • Budget-friendly from Berlin, Paris, Prague and beyond
  • ZOB and Hbf share the same plaza — connecting trams stop a minute away
  • Overnight buses save you a hotel night — pay one less night
